Clay Day with Nadine

This Summer workshop is an opportunity for you to complete a project that is slightly bigger and more time consuming and would be difficult to do in our normal class. Please come prepared with a project or speak to me to discuss some ideas. Our day will start at 10:00 and we will finish at ca 16:15. We will have a lunch break at ca 12:00 and there will be time for a tea & cake break in the afternoon ca 14:00. Having discussed food options, I thought it might be great if we do a “fuddle”. For those of you, like me, who did not know this word, it means bring a dish to share a dish. So just bring something you would like to share for lunch, be it a salat or some sausage rolls. If you are not up for this, or have dietary requirements that will prevent this, just bring your own lunch (but please let me know, so I can plan accordingly). All food will be served outside of the studio, as Mr Health and Mrs Safety are still with us. I will bring a traditional German dish and will also provide tea and coffee and cake.

Dates: Tuesday, 12th August and Thursday, 21st August 2025, cost £65

Nerikomi beer stein

Nerikomi with Nadine

The Japanese technique of Nerikomi is known for its intricate pattern within the clay itself. It involves staking and slicing coloured clay to create a multi-coloured loaf or patterned slices, which are then used to create ceramic forms. During this workshop you will learn a bit about the background of this technique and make a "loaf" yourself that can then be made into a tile, bowl or plate. Please note, that the focus of this workshop is on learning the technique. The workshop will last ca 2 to 2.5 hours and once your piece is dry and fired, we will glaze it in a neutral transparent glaze for you. You will be able to pick it up ca 3 to 4 weeks after the workshop. This workshop is suitable for most skill levels but is ideal for those who have some experience with clay already. We will provide a black and a white stoneware clay, all tools and formers.

Dates: Tuesday, 19th August 2025, cost: £50

surface decoration workshop

Surface Decoration with Becca Brown

During this session we will focus on various surface decorating techniques while the clay is at leather hard stage, including mono-printing with slip and oxides, working with stencils, wax resist, sgraffito and water etching. We will work on stoneware tile shapes, learning the techniques that you can apply in future projects. The pieces will be fired and finished with a transparent glaze, or left unglazed if you prefer. The workshop is lead by Yorkshire artist Becca Brown and you can find out more about her work her: https://beccabrown.squarespace.com/about This workshop is suitable for all skill levels. We will provide all materials and tools and you will be able to pick up the fired pieces ca 3 to 4 weeks after the workshop.

Firings and Costs:

  • Problems with firings are part of ceramics and can be due to a variety of reasons. I will guide you through the making process and support you as much as possible. However, there are many reasons why pieces do not turn out as hoped or sometimes break in the kiln. These can be out of our control. The ultimate risk of failure lies therefore with you, although we do offer re-firings in case of glaze problems (where possible).
